Message in a Bottle

Raising awareness for sustainability through printed messages on a reusable water bottle.

We wanted to focus on increasing awareness and knowledge of sustainability issues starting with the freshmen population. Phase I begins with giving each incoming student a professionally designed reusable water bottle (i.e. Nalgene) that will provide students with an alternative to buying non-reusable water bottles that are thrown away after one use. We plan on having four different designs, possibly one for each of the Maryland colors, and each design will include different information.

We plan on listing meaningful facts about sustainability issues in different topics on each bottle, either in bullet points or captivating graphics. These are intended to engage students and make them conscientious of how their actions are affecting the global environment. Follow up resources will be listed somewhere most likely in the form of a URL, and this entire initiative will:

A) Decrease water bottle waste
B) Increase awareness of present issues
C) Teach individual practices to reduce carbon footprint
D) Provoke students into becoming more involved in sustainability
