Global Sustainability Jam

The Jam is LIVE

on Fri, 11/21/2014 - 11:52

After months or preparation by hundreds of people, the 2014 Global Sustanability Jam is live in more than 40 cities worldwide (precise numbers will come later).

The Jam kicked off in Jam powerhouse Tehran, followed by Pyramids Jam in Cairo and first-timer Q8 Kuwait. More Jams in the Middle East, Australia and China followed, and now more and more Jams are joining every hour... it's going to be quite a ride. After all, we only have 48 hours to save the world...

Get a taste of the Jam at Twitter or on our BUZZ page:

Want to host a Jam in your town?

on Fri, 08/29/2014 - 22:00

Do you want to see a Jam (or more than one?) in your town in November?  We are still accepting locations!

Hosting a Jam is a great opportunity to build a community of people interested in a design-based approach to working, creativity and problem solving. It's a terrific way to both learn and teach, to build awareness, and to meet amazing people. It's a way to grow, to share, and to have a great time.

Anyone can host a Jam - join us!
To learn more about what it means to be a Jam Host, just click on "Host a Jam".
or, if you are an experienced Jammer and ready to sign up right now, click here to register your Jam! (You only need basic information to start.)

PS Need some more inspiration? Check out this great video by Joshua Lee of one of last year's locations - the London Sustainability Jam.

Save the date for Global Sustainability Jam 2014! November 21-23, Planet Earth.

on Mon, 06/16/2014 - 12:50

We can't accept locations yet, but mark your diaries! The next Global Sustainability Jam will take place from the 21 to 23 November 2014 all over Planet Earth. (Dates may vary in countries with other weekends).

More details soon! (And if you can't make it, check out the Global Service Jam (link)  in Feb/March 2015 or the Global GovJam (link) in June 2015! )

It's over, folks.

on Sun, 11/24/2013 - 23:09

It’s over, folks, it’s over. As our ever-smiling friends in Oakland hit their upload deadline, the Global Sustainability Jam 2013 is no longer LIVE. #GSusJam is over folks. It's over. It was amazing, thrilling, hard, hard work. But it's over.

We look forward to browsing through the designs, and fixing the last few upload glitches. But for now, after a pretty sleepless weekend, your Global Team is heading for bed.

And we need to introduce those incredible, generous people from GlobalHQ who gave up their own weekends, mostly to sit alone by a computer, supporting you on the Planet Jam and social media, giving you guidance, energy and help. Thanks to Adriana in Colombia, Ana in Italy, Joanna in Poland and especially "no sleep" Natasche in Brazil. They made it possible for Adam and Markus to stay alive and sane this weekend, and did a far, far better job than we have ever done.

We're sorry for what went wrong (blame Adam & Markus!), and we say THANKS for what went right! Enjoy those last few presentations, enjoy the parties, enjoy a good night's sleep. If you’re back at work already, looking over your shoulder at an unforgettable weekend, then take a moment to look at a few projects, share a few pictures, tell a friend. Thanks to the wonderful Hosts & EVERY Jammer too! The Global Sustainability Jam was as easy (and unexpected) as A B 3!

And if you want to do it again - better, hotter, wilder, and BIGGER - we'll see you at the Global SERVICE Jam, 7-9 March, Planet Earth.

We had 48 hours, and maybe we saved the World - or at least the part of it that you carry with you. And that's a start!

You rocked! You Jammed! You are the Jam!

JAM OFF!

Secret Theme Video 2013

on Sat, 11/23/2013 - 08:48

Secret Theme Video, Global Sustainability Jam 2013 from Global Service Jam on Vimeo.

Every year, local Jams kick off by revealing the Secret Theme, usually by showing a video, which also contains Tips and advice for Jammers. This year's Secret Theme Video was made by international Jammer of mystery Mauro Rego. Thanks to Mauro and his contributors!

We are Jamming!

on Fri, 11/22/2013 - 22:45

Global Sustainability Jam 2013 will take place on the WEEKEND OF THE 22nd OF NOVEMBER, 2013.

GSusJ13 is coming

It's certain - there will be a Global Sustainability Jam in 2013!On the tail of the latest amazing Global Service Jam (our sister event which took place in a whopping 124 cities!), Jam initiators Markus and Adam confirmed that GSusJ13 will take place in October or November 2013! As soon as the exact date is announced, we will start accepting sites. WOW!

on Mon, 11/05/2012 - 20:03

WOW! What an amazing Jam! We're too exhausted to write much just now; just to say THANKS to EVERYONE who made this Jam happen.

The SUPPORTERS and sponsors who made the Jam possible in many locations, and enriched it everywhere. They didn't have to do that - we appreciate it

The HOSTS who worked so hard - before, during and after those crazy 48 hours. You are so amazing, we are so lucky to have you.

And especially the JAMMERS who came, stayed, and gave their energy, creativity and HEART to make this Jam come alive!

Personally at Global HQ we want to thank Andi Fehr of the Nuremberg Jam and his crew for looking after us and giving us a wonderful environment to work, eat, and even sleep in; Thomas Schoenweitz for late-night visits and truly useful help on some tricky tasks (and for help choosing the Theme); and Laura Andersen and Kendra Schillington for - without knowing much about the Jam - giving up three days of their European trip to work like crazy for 1300 strangers... you all ROCK!

Thanks again, everyone! Now give yourselves a treat and take a look around here...

Co-creating a big story

on Fri, 11/02/2012 - 17:00

Oh, wouldn't it be nice, like, in a couple of weeks we can look back on the jam and pull out our glossy volume "The History of the Global Sustainability Jam 2012" and show it to our kids? Well, we though so. That's why we started to write that volume right now as things begin to happen. And since it is 2012 it obviously comes in a virtual form on Storify.com.

We will try to capture the nuggets of the content that is being created.

Click on the image to see the story unfold. Also, please do ping @gsusjam on Twitter with suggestions in case we have missed stuff :)

The first Jam, Tel Aviv, is already Jamming (they have a Friday-Saturday weekend). We wish them well!

Within a few hours, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hong Kong will join them, and the Jam will be truly underway.

Here's to a great Global Sustainability Jam 2011 - we have just 48 hours to save the World.

Join us for a great weekend...

on Wed, 09/28/2011 - 22:51

It's just one month until the Global Sustainability Jam starts in dozens of locations worldwide. If you want to spend a wild weekend meeting great people, bouncing ideas around and - this is the best bit - not just talking but actually doing, we hope you will join us!

Whatver your skills, interests or experience, you can make a useful contribution to a Jam near you. And if there is no Jam nearby, it is easy to start one - all you need is a room (perhaps your home or office), a few people and internet connectivity. You'll be working face to face with the people around you, but linked up with other people on six continents, all of them Jamming on the same theme. Perhaps you'll develop a new object, or a service, or an initiative - or some combination of all of those.  Whatever you develop, you'll publish your results for the world at the end of the weekend... and you might make a difference.

We'll be chatting at several times on the 8th of September (7th and 9th too, in some time zones). Check out the Basecamp to get all the details!

(If you're a Host, and don't have Basecamp access, you're missing out. Contact us today!)

A world of worlds...

on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 14:30

As more and more Jams join up, several are developing thier own takes on Noemia Guarda's logo. Check out some of the latest!

The winning logo...

on Tue, 08/09/2011 - 00:16

Congratulations to Noémia Guarda from the Oporto Jam who designed our winning logo! Noémia was one of our youngest competitors, and is a student of Graphic Design at Esad, the School of Arts and Design.

It was a tough competition, and our judges had several favourites, but in the end Noémia's design convinced the majority.  Our gratitude goes to Jase Cooper (the designer of our GSJ11 jam jars) as well as Marc Stickdorn of TiSDT, and Lauren Currie, Sarah Drummond and Kirsty Sinclair of Snook for their brilliant input. And many thanks to the other competitiors, whose skill and creativity made the decision so hard.

Remember, local Jams are welcome to make thier own interpretations of the global logo - and we're keen to see what you come up with.

So we're preparing a download pack for you, containing hi-res vector versions, the individial components, and all the information you need for a great local version.  (We'll also be updating the website.)

Watch this space. :)

Logo competition - you had 48 hours.

on Fri, 07/22/2011 - 16:44

The winning logo will be announced this week!

Last Spring, at the Global Service Jam , UK designer Jase Cooper kindly designed and donated the brilliant jam jar logo which was adopted and adapted by each location into a beautiful variety of different local logos.  For the Global Sustainability Jam, we want to repeat this success -  but with a different starting idea.

We need a logo which can do two jobs:

i. it can serve at the official logo for the Global Sustainability Jam, on pages like this and worldwide.
ii. it can be the starting point for local jams (if they want) to create their own versions.

We asked you to submit logo ideas and designs*. Our judges are looking at them carefully... and we'll have the results in a few days...

Looking forward to it!

Adam & Markus

*(Just for glory, no cash. You'll be making the logo for the Global Sustainability Jam, a non-profit event. We can't pay, but we will always credit you. Hey, we're jamming here.)

Sites preregistered on 4 continents...

on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 20:59

Before "official" site registration opened for the Sustainability Jam, we offered our experienced Global Service Jam hosts the special opportunity to sign up early.

What a response! After just a few days, we already have Jamsites preregistered on 4 continents with more signing up each day.

If you were a GSJ organiser in March, and want to repeat the fun at GSusJ in October, we'd love to have you. Drop us a note and we will fast-track you in!

You have 48 hours to save the World.

on Wed, 10/06/2010 - 21:17

Sounds like an impossible challenge? Then step up to work alongside other creative, passionate people in an energetic, worldwide, face-to-face event. Whatever your skills, whatever your interest, you will find a role.

Last March, around 2000 service designers in 59 cities on 6 continents had a great time creating 203 heroic ideas in one weekend. This October, the Global Sustainability Jam will build on that success, setting a common challenge based around sustainability for people meeting at local sites all over the world.

Everyone is welcome - service designers, object designers, sustainability experts, professors, business people, teachers, hackers, makers, artists, students, kids, mums and grandpas - you will form teams and work together for 48 hours to create brand-new real-world designs, projects, objects or ideas which can make that little difference.

Or perhaps a big difference - it's up to you.

Through the weekend, you'll be linked to other jammers at other sites all over the globe, working in different ways on different answers to the same challenge, sharing problems, advice, and insights. And on Sunday at 5pm, you will publish your results to the world.

Want to learn more? Want to join us? Want to organise a Jam in your community? Want to help run the global Jam?  Sign up here, and follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
